Two people were charged and 55 infringement notices issued during a police crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour across the Illawarra’s public transport network last week.
NSW Police Transport Command (PTC) officers patrolled 40 railway stations and 21 trains during the one-day, high-visibility operation – dubbed Operation Colossus – on Friday night.
The officers, both uniformed and plain-clothed, were deployed on the rail network between 4pm and midnight on Friday.
They were assisted by bicycle operatives and the police force’s Operations Support Group.
During the operation, two people were arrested and charged with drug possession, graffiti and traffic offences.
Fifty-five infringement notices for transport offences were also issued.
PTC Inspector Craig James said the aim of the operation was to make the rail network safe for all commuters.
“The dedicated officers of the Police Transport Command will not stand for any criminal or anti-social behaviour on the network, and you will continue to see us around transport hubs,” Inspector James said.
“We make no apologies for catching criminals that use the public transport network and putting them before the courts.
“We will continue to conduct high-visibility and covert operations across the public transport network in order to make it even safer for everyone.”
