But when he realised the charity Legacy had to raise its own funds to support people who lost a partner or spouse serving in the armed forces, he decided to put his lights to good use.
From this Thursday night the slightly-over-the-top Christmas lighting display at his home will be used to raise money for Legacy – with a sausage sizzle, music, and donations welcomed.
Mr Hebblewhite, 56 and a grandfather of five, said he was happy to help the cause.
“It’s very important – for the people who lost loved ones over there,” he said. “I can’t believe it’s not government-funded to be honest. If you lose your life or your partner dies, you could be stuck for cash.”
The lights kick off on Thursday, December 7, at John’s house on the corner of Meadow St and Douglas Rd, Fairy Meadow, from 6.30pm. He will keep them going for four weeks.
