There are “a few bad eggs” driving taxis in the Illawarra, the general manager of the city’s taxi service has admitted.
In a long statement that touched on a wide range of subjects, John Megas, the general manager of the Illawarra Taxi Network – formerly Wollongong Radio Cabs – apologised for the behaviour of some of the group’s drivers.
“We have had some bad publicity of late and we have stayed silent as we work through disciplinary action with those drivers purported to have been involved in recent alleged incidents,” Mr Megas said.
“As the general manager of ITN I would like to apologise for the actions of a few. In any industry there are and will always unfortunately be a few bad eggs.”
It is unclear what “alleged incidents” he is referring to – efforts to contact Mr Megas since receiving the statement were unsuccessful.
The Mercury has reported on several alleged confrontations between taxi drivers and Uber drivers.
The most recent was late last month when a 66-year-old Uber driver Rosemary Paterson had coffee thrown all over her car.
Mrs Paterson also alleged taxi drivers had flashed their lights at her, and one cut her off while driving.
A NSW Taxi Council spokesman said the matter was under investigation.
In the release, Mr Megas also said ITN was introducing a new “safety management system”.
“Every ITN taxi driver will undergo training in customer service etiquette, the point to point regulations, a new range of policies and protocols to ensure that, safety, reliability, trust and value for money for the community, will continue to be, the pillars on which we measure our success,” John Megas said.
