The Illawarra Mercury’s Christmas lights competition 2017 has closed.
Dreaming of a bright Christmas
After entering the Illawarra Mercury’s annual Christmas Lights competition for at least seven years, Adrian Chilby of Albion Park’s Stubbs Road is finally a winner.
“We’ve made it a motto now, whoever moves into the street has to put up lights … it’s a prerequisite,” he laughed.
Mr Chilby has been decorating his house with the help of his family since they moved in around 16 years ago – each year adding more and more to the collection.
“I probably started off with one strand of fairy lights on the roof and it’s progressed from there,” he said. “I’ve [now] got a whole garden shed out the back just for lights.”
This year’s new addition is a sleigh Mr Chilby has built himself so passers by can jump in and get photos with.
He said in the days leading up to Christmas his street is “chaos” with hundreds of people heading up and down the street from sunset to midnight.
Runner up of the competition was John Hebblewhite of Fern Hill. Warwick Erwin won the People’s Choice Award.
