Swimmers from the region finished with 17 medals across the eight days of competition, with Wests Illawarra’s Sydney Brown collecting an impressive five medals.
Brown completed the 50-100 metre freestyle double, finishing first in the final of both events. The James Greathead-trained swimmer also finished second in the 100m butterfly and third in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
Only a week prior to the state championships, Brown finished third in the 13 years 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 13-14 years 4x50m relay at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide.
Other Wests Illawarra swimmers to record podium finishers included Madeleine Bakker who won the 17-18 years 50m freestyle final and finished second in the 100m freestyle. 17-year-old Nathan DeLutiis claimed silver in the boys 17-18 years 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
Chelsea Jones won the girls 12 years 50m freestyle, finished second in the 100m freestyle and third in the 200m freestyle. She was also a member of the Wests Illawarra 12 and under 4x50 relay team that finished third. The other members were Jaimie DeLutiis, Grace Ohara and Bridie DeLutiis.
Corrimal Swim Club’s Zara Sharman also had a successful week of competition, fiishing second in the girls 15 years 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle and third in the 200m freestyle. Wollongong’s Lukas Burri finished third in the boys 11 years 100m breaststroke.
