The Illawarra ladies want to use their home green advantage to win back the trophy in a competition between the Steel City rivals that dates back to 1962.
Newcastle have won the Howard Shield in 37 annual matches, while Illawarra have 17 victories and last won the Shield in 2016 at Albion Park.
Illawarra District ladies official Millie Randall says the Howard Shield is one of the big days on the representative calendar.
‘’The ladies love playing in it and enjoy catching up with each other,’’ Randall said.
Each association brings 28 bowlers who play in seven rinks. The Illawarra squad features bowlers from a number of local clubs including Warilla, Windang and Wiseman Park.

Albion Park BC are Illawarra’s hosting club for the second time in three years, with a Newcastle club to run the event in 2019.
