DPI/Fisheries reports seven people haven been apprehended by officers as they allegedly gathered almost 1500 cockles from Lake Illawarra.
After conducting surveillance, Fisheries officers intervened and found that six of the people did not hold a recreational fishing fee receipt or exemption from paying the fee. All of the cockles were returned to the water alive and investigations are continuing. Fishers are reminded that they must pay the recreational fishing fee prior to hand gathering and the possession limit for cockles is 50 per person.
In a second incident, at Hen and Chicken Bay, a repeat offender was apprehended allegedly in possession of over 3000 cockles after Fisheries officers conducted a night time surveillance operation.
The man, who has been caught a number of times before, could face the prospect of heavy penalties if found guilty of repeated illegal activities.
To report illegal fishing activity call Fishers Watch on 1800 043 536 or report it online at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/compliance/report-illegal-activity.
