A 29-year-old man wanted by police has been refused bail after being found at the scene of an alleged police pursuit that ended in bushland at Koonawarra.

Police were combing shrubbery off Mary Davis Lane last Thursday morning in search for two masked men who led police on a car chase through Dapto when they saw Shay-Lin Stenzel exit the same bushland about 10am.

Police allegedly discovered him in possession of a fold out knife while arresting him.

He was transported to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with resisting apprehension and having custody of a knife.

He did not oppose a detention application brought by prosecutors in court on Friday.

Court documents reveal Stenzel, a disqualified driver, was on bail relating to allegations he led police on a dangerous car chase through the streets of Wollongong in June last year.

Police allege they saw Stenzel behind the wheel of a black Mitsubishi Triton ute travelling east on Burelli Street on the morning of June 20 and, knowing he was disqualified from driving until 2025, followed the ute into Kenny Street where they attempted to pull the vehicle over.

It is alleged Stenzel accelerated away from police, crossing over to the wrong side of the road and reaching speeds of up to 100km/hr in the signposted 50km/hr zone as he attempted to evade capture.

Police terminated the pursuit after Stenzel narrowly missed hitting a cyclist, court documents said.

He was arrested at Wollongong Local Court later that morning however denied being in the vehicle, let alone driving it.
