The family of six from Syria now call Wollongong home, after moving to the city four months ago.
On January 24 they joined about 70 people, mainly from Syria and Lebanon, at a Pool Orientation & Introduction to First Aid event organised by Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI).
MCCI multicultural youth services coordinator Allyson Pazos said the school holiday program was a rousing success.
“We’ve had a great response from people wanting to learn about pool and water safety, which is terrific,’’ she said.

“We are working with communities to create awareness and safe practices around our pools and beaches.”
Ms Pazos thanked session coordinator Peter Wilson from Wollongong City Council, as well as Beaton Park and Lakeside Leisure Centre for hosting the event.
SCARF and Surf Life Saving NSW also supported the event.
