On Monday, Barwon Inspector Martin Burke told The Leader preliminary investigations suggested the man’s car crossed to the wrong side of the road.
”The purple Subaru Liberty collided with an oncoming truck and as a result the male driver of the car died at the scene,” he said.
”Police are still preparing a report for the coroner but initial investigations suggest the Liberty crossed into the path of the oncoming truck.”
The truck driver was not injured but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Police are also investigating whether the car had a cancelled registration.
It prompted a desperate plea by the region’s paramedics to take care on the roads with crews called to a string of crashes in just a few short days.
