Just after 4pm, there were reports of a large column of smoke coming from near the intersection of the M1 and Northcliffe Drive.
The RFS listed the incident as “out of control”.
Crews on the ground say they are working on about 150 metres of bush alight.
Live Traffic has also warned that traffic is affected in the area in both directions.
There is not access to the M1 from Northcliffe Drive. Motorists will need to continue on Northcliffe Drive and use the Princes Highway instead.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution.
Also just after 4pm, crews were responding to a fire at Burringbar Street, near the Dapto skate park.
This was quickly contained.
Two hours ago, crews responded to a bush fire at known hot spot Hooka Creek Road. This fire is now under control and listed for “advice”, the RFS says.
The NSW RFS has continued to warn of increased fire danger due to the hot and windy weather.
A warning of extreme conditions is in place for the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
With a cool change several hours away, the RFS has warned people to keep an eye out for any new fires and asked that any sightings be reported to Triple-0.
A total fire ban and severe rating remain in place for the region on Thursday.
