The winner of Australian Idol’s 2006 series has focused heavily on his music career for the past decade but was unaware his talent was building.
“I started telling my kids bedtime stories, because on the road they would ask me ‘dad, can you start recording the stories’ because I’m away,” he said. “So I just recorded them on my phone. Last year I sat down and found there were more than 100 stories.”
The tales of pirates and fun, exciting adventures were all made up on the spot and ranged from 15 to 20 minutes in length.
Rather than delete the dozens of stories, Leith decided to record them with music and sound effects in his home studio so other children could enjoy them too. The result, an app and CD to be released in March called Storytime.
“It’s been harder to record these than an album,” he said. “I spent an entire year recording these.”
Regardless of his new endeavour, Leith is still focusing on his music with an impending east coast tour next month to perform the biggest hits from his eight studio albums and some new tunes that have so far gone unheard.
“It does [astound] me sometimes – I’ve been really lucky,” he said, also thanking his fans for their continuing support over the years.
