A woman has told police that she witnessed two motorcycle riders stationary next to a Ford Falcon sedan on Farmborough Road about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
Police have been told one rider opened the front passenger door of the Ford and stabbed the occupant three times.
The motorcycles stayed with the Ford and moved through the intersection together, turning right onto the Princes Highway, and all vehicles travelled south.
Police were contacted via triple zero and officers from Lake Illawarra police began a search, as no stabbing incident had been reported to police or hospitals in the area.
A short time later, officers attempted to stop two motorcycles in Baan Baan Street at Dapto. When the riders failed to stop, the officers pursued one motorcycle through the Berkeley area.
The pursuit was terminated a short time later.
The armed male was described to police as being between 18 and 20 years old, of dark complexion, with brown eyes, clean shaven, 175cm tall and with an average build.
He wore a grey sleeveless hooded shirt, blue denim jeans and a white open-faced crash helmet.
No further description of the individuals or vehicles involved was available.
Police have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the unconfirmed stabbing or the pursuit to contact police immediately.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
