To celebrate the St George Illawarra Dragons first Wollongong home game of the season at WIN Stadium, the Illawarra Mercury will feature a special eight-page wrap on Saturday, March 31.
The Easter Saturday special edition will take an in-depth look at the clash between the Dragons and our steel city rivals, the Newcastle Knights.
The edition will feature a special cover, a 2018 Dragons team poster and all the news ahead of the Easter Sunday afternoon clash which is expected to draw a large crowd to Dragons home turf.
The Dragons will be out to slay the Knights, both teams having opened the season with a couple of good wins each.
Based on our backgrounds and foundations as steel industry heartlands, the inter-city rivalry between Newcastle and Wollongong has stood the test of time even though Newcastle’s steel operations haven’t.
Wollongong has always played little brother to our bigger northern rival.
Adding further importance to the game is the fact both teams will play for the Alex McKinnon Cup (pictured).
The Cup was forged in the honour of McKinnon who suffered a horrific spinal cord injury in a game against the Melbourne Storm in 2012.
McKinnon started his career with the Dragons before moving to the Knights in 2012.
Adding further spice to the contest is Newcastle is headed up by coach and former Dragon Nathan Brown.
