The Unanderra-based Bisalloy Steel is already part of a deal to build 211 combat vehicles for the Australian Army.
Bisalloy will be supplying the armoured plating, made with 2000 tonnes of BlueScope steel.
Now the two Illawarra businesses will be supplying steel for possible use in the new fleet of submarines.
Bisalloy will be using up to 250 tonnes of BlueScope steel to make a specialised product which will be tested to see if it meets pressure specifications for the hulls of the subs.
“This will be the first time Australian industry has attempted to make this particular type of steel, demonstrating the ongoing opportunities for local industry within the Future Submarine Program,” Minister Pyne said.
The fleet of 12 submarines will be built by an Australian workforce in Adelaide, Mr Pyne said.
Bisalloy steel products have been used in other military vehicles, including armoured personnel carriers and Collins Class submarines.
