Initial reports suggest one hectare of grass is alight and firefighters are working to protect a line of homes and factories in the area.
The fire, which is burning off Shellharbour Road, is listed on the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) website as being out of control.
A number of Fire and Rescue NSW crews are on scene or responding to the incident.
Strong winds are being experienced across Wollongong on Sunday morning.
A westerly wind gust of 50km/h was recorded at Port Kembla Harbour at 9am.
Meanwhile, a bushfire that's burned almost 1000 hectares in Sydney's southwest remains out of control but has been downgraded as conditions ease and crews begin back-burning operations.
