This week see’s the comedian coupled with Denise Scott in Wollongong’s Spiegeltent for a show titled Disappointments. Tuesday’s show has already sold out with the Wednesday not far behind.
“It’s not easy making a living in the arts in Australia because it’s a pretty small community,” Lucy said.
The duo created the show as a pro-active way to tackle depression several years ago and said it encourages the audience to “celebrate their mediocrity and their shattered dreams”.
“A few years ago now we were both pretty depressed and we were sort of struggling to get out of bed,” the funnywoman said.
“So we thought why not exploit disappointments and why don’t we stop doing our whinging over lunch or over the phone and actually do it on a stage.
“People do skip out of the theatre or the tent feeling so much better about their own lives, essentially because they’re not Judith Lucy or Denise Scott.”
The pair are taking a mini-break in the middle of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for their sojourn in Wollongong. Lucy said she was looking forward to it, as most other comedians would be “stressing out and losing their minds” while they will be quite relaxed.
As for how many times she’s performed in Wollongong – no idea. She said she’s been in the game far too long and it’s all a “blur”. While the formula to how she became quite the successful comedian is still baffling.
“I would like to say it’s because of my extraordinary talent but maybe it’s just stupidity and the fact that I can’t do anything else,” Lucy said.
“I have no qualifications and at 50 it’s a bit late for me to go back to being a sandwich hand, which is really the only other job that I've known. So maybe it’s just shear desperation that has kept me going.”
