Tallawarra Power Station operator EnergyAustralia is launching a $20,000 program to support community projects and initiatives with a potential to help education and social inclusion in the Illawarra.

Asset leader Jason Lee said EnergyAustralia is inviting applications that support the community.

He said the company recognised that sometimes all a person or group required was a helping hand to get a good idea that can help others in the broader community off the ground.

“We take great pride in being able to support these ideas and projects,” he said.

In 2017 grants supported Dapto Rural Fire Brigade, Dapto Scouts, Gerringong Men's Shed, Illawarra Cycle Club, Illawarra Drug Awareness Group and SCARF.

SCARF executive officer Sherryl Reddy said funds were used to host a community picnic at Illawarra Live Steamers and an excursion to Canberra for a group of 40 people who had all arrived in Australia during 2017 from Syria, Congo, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Myanmar.

Ms Reddy said the activities helped build a strong sense of belonging in the diverse Illawarra community.

Mr Lee said each year EnergyAustralia grants are awarded based on a project’s potential to benefit the Illawarra region in the key areas of education and social inclusion.

Education: Funding aimed at promoting education and knowledge acquisition. It can include programs with a social or environmental focus and organisations which support career or skill development.

Social inclusion: Funding aimed at facilitating social inclusion. These initiatives support community cohesion and can include such things as men’s sheds, upgrading communal facilities, improving local amenities and supporting vulnerable community members.

EnergyAustralia’s community reference group helps assess applications and decides how grants are allocated.

Applications for the EnergyAustralia Tallawarra Community Grants program close on May 14 at 5pm at
