Late last year Albion Park bricklayer Tim Karkowski, 24, finally felt ready so sent in an application to appear on The Voice, his blind audition airing on the Nine network Sunday night.
“A lot [was going through my mind], to be honest. I do a lot of gigs and do a lot of things but the best way to describe it is I’ve never felt so ready for something,” he told the Mercury of his emotions walking onto the Fox Studios set.
Contestants sing during a blind audition – where coaches Delta Goodrem, Kelly Rowland, Boy George and Joe Jonas can’t see them – in the hope one or all like what they hear.
If they make it to the ‘knockouts’, artists go head-to-head in groups of three as they perform a song their coach has chosen within a theme. If they make it through this they perform against one other in a ‘battle’ before performing on the ‘live shows’.
The ultimate winner of The Voice receives a recording contract with Universal Music Australia and $100,000 in prize money.
During the application process Karkowski told producers he loves to sing along to the radio on the job, and when he’s not on site he’s surfing, skating, at the gym, or gigging with his band Turning Tides.
“We’re just a covers band at the moment but we’re pushing originals now,” he said.
You can catch Karkowski and his bandmates around Wollongong at venues like The Brewery and Town Hall Chambers.
