South Coast musician Max Armata made a fleeting visit to epicentre in California, performing at the festival for the first time under the name Yahtzel.
“It was awesome, the crowd there was ridiculous I wasn’t expecting to have a quarter as many people in the crowd,” he said.
“It’s super sunny, everyone is dressed to the tee I noticed, it has a huge fashion element which I didn’t really expect. Everyone’s happy … it’s almost like Splendour in the Grass but in the middle of the desert.”
Big names at this year’s event included Beyonce, Eminem, Jamiroquai, Fleet Foxes and Odesza (who Armata is currently touring the US with). Just securing a spot somewhere in the lineup is definitely something to put on your resume.
“It’s definitely an accolade for sure, I’ve always had it in my sights so to get there and do it was a little surreal,” Armata said.
The next major festival will be back home at Byron Bay’s Splendour in July with Drew Carmody – the duo collectively known as Carmada. They’ll be on the same bill as Kendrick Lamar, Lorde and Vampire Weekend.
The now sold out event saw a reported 35,000 tickets snapped up by fans in less than an hour from going on sale.
Armata said he’s looking to bringing a full band on stage and giving the crowd more than just a DJ set.
