Contrary to earlier reports, the man is aged 82.
He has been placed in an induced coma at St George Hospital, where he was airlifted about 6pm Thursday. Police have since confirmed he was hit by a car about 300 metres north of Haywards Bay Drive.
A witness to the crash told the Mercury “there was nothing that anyone involved could do” to avoid the collision.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Witnesses have told police he was walking north and was attempting to cross the roadway from the western curb when he walked into the path of a car in lane two.
Numerous people stopped to help him and administer first aid before paramedics arrived.
He was taken by road ambulance to the airport at Albion Park, then airlifted to St George Hospital.
