Nicola’s Tutoring, of Blackbutt, was declared Champion Sole Trader in Sydney on Saturday night just four days after she graduated from the University of Wollongong.
An emotional Nicola Xanthopoulos, 23, accepted the award in front of 1100 people at The Star.
“I am just completely overwhelmed,” she said.
“As a student that was bullied at school it took a lot of courage for me to get back into the field. So after six years of encouraging other students who have had negative bullying experiences...this has been very rewarding for me.”
Ms Xanthopoulos offers one-on-one tutoring to students of all ages. And she has kept her prices affordable.
“I support students from as young as three years old to adult level. I teach a range of subjects such as literacy and speech development for preschool aged children, all the way through to primary and high school subjects,” she said.
“Throughout the last six years I have had multiple health issues and operations, studied full time at UOW and three months at Harvard University, all while working full time and running my business. I have now decided to continue my studies and have started a Masters in Education (secondary) at the University of Sydney.”
The Australian Small Business Champion Awards are a national recognition program for outstanding small businesses in Australia.
The annual awards encourage high standards of excellence in small business practice in range of categories.
To get to the national level a business must win at the regional level first.
The annual awards are run by Precedent Productions.
Managing director and founder Steve Loe said the Australian Small Business Champion Awards were a way of recognising the efforts of small business people whose efforts contribute to the prosperity and vitality of communities and local economies across the nation.
“As a small business owner myself, I know the vision and dedication to excellence required to succeed. These traits have been displayed in abundance by all of our 2018 Small Business Champions,” he said.
Along with an awards statue and certificate Nicola's Tutoring gained national recognition as the best sole trader in Australia.
