Michael Gale handed himself in to Wollongong Police station at 2.35pm on Tuesday, and was charged with murder.

He was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong court on Wednesday.

Police issued a warrant for Gale’s arrest on Friday night.

Steve Edwards, 39, was rushed to hospital after he was wounded in a fight that broke out outside a Wollongong methadone clinic in Denison St shortly before 6am that day.

Police confirmed Mr Edwards died a short time later, however they would not elaborate on the extent of his injuries, only to say an autopsy would be undertaken.

Detectives spent hours combing the scene, with Dension Street cordoned off to the public for most of the day.

On Friday night, police issued a warrant for the arrest of 52-year-old Gale and called for public assistance in locating him.

During a press conference with media earlier in the day, Acting Superintendent Chad Gillies said police were called to the clinic just before daybreak following reports of a fight on the footpath outside.

He said officers found Mr Edwards with a stab wound to his chest and tried desperately to save him.

“My understanding is CPR was administered to the male at the scene, there was an amount of blood at the scene,” Supt Gillies said.

Mr Edwards was rushed to Wollongong Hospital but died a short time later.

Supt Gillies said Mr Edwards, from Bulli, was on his way to visit the methadone clinic when the fight broke out.
