With the amazing conditions for fishing and some great reports of tuna, nearly every boat headed wide to chase these elusive fish.
Reports during the week were rife with big yellow fin tuna and marlin being about just south of Browns Mountain off Sydney in 300 fathoms.
Joel Oliver headed wide early last week in the hunt for tuna and not long after the spread was put out, they hooked and landed a nice blue marlin of about 150kgs on a squidgy bluewater livey lure made back in the ‘90’s.
Lures went straight back out and not long after they hooked a double on some big yellowfin with both fish hitting the decks and weighing over 70kgs a piece.
With those reports during the week, both Browns and the southern canyons were like an oceanic parking lot, but there were only a handful of fish caught and most of those were late Saturday afternoon.
There was one big fish caught locally with reports of a massive yellow fin of a horse 90kg plus, caught straight out the front of Kiama in about 600 fathoms but no details to hand as yet.
Sunday saw another hot bite on the tuna but they had moved wider with Heaton’s Hill wide further out from Browns giving up some excellent fish from a patch of good water.
Closer to home the snapper fishing was relatively good with quite a few boats trying the shallows as the reefs are littered with cuttlefish galore as their spawning runs continues.
Some good reds were taken just on dawn in the shallows but as the sun rose, they went off the bite.
Micro jigs and plastics were the go to and they were the undoing of some nice sized sampson fish and kingfish also.
Jackets and toads seemed to be non-existent over the weekend which was welcomed by anglers and there were also plenty of blue mowies, pigfish and some monster trevally about as well.
