The long-awaited swell arrived as a weakening low pressure system over the southeastern Tasman Sea and an approaching strong high-pressure system combined to drive vigorous southerly winds along the NSW coast.
A maximum wave height of 4.1 metres was recorded by the wave buoy offshore of Port Kembla at 11am on Tuesday.
The water temperature – 19 degrees – was slightly warmer than Bellambi’s Tuesday top of 18.2 degrees.
Air temperatures will dip to 17 degrees on what will be a partly cloudy Wednesday, with the slight chance of an early morning shower. A strong wind warning remains current for the Illawarra and Batemans coasts on Wednesday.
Temperatures will climb by a couple of degrees as the week progresses, with tops of 19 degrees in Wollongong on both Thursday and Friday.
At this stage, Saturday will be partly cloudy with the slight chance of a shower and a top of 18 degrees in the city and 19 inland at Albion Park.
A sunny Sunday is forecast, with highs of 19 and 20 degrees, respectively.
