The Tahs dominated the match from the onset, with Nevan Bergan crossing in the opening five minutes and they never looked back, leading 36-5 midway through the second half.
The win marks the Tahs third win of the season and coach Eliot O’Donnell is pleased with the way the team has progressively improved throughout the opening six rounds.
“We just keep building on each week,” O’Donnell said. “It was good to get the win after going so close against Avondale last week.
“Our defence was really good. It’s a cliche, but we just want to improve each week and the boys are starting to gel.
“Campbelltown had some big guys and they kept coming at us, but we just kept aiming up. If we keep doing that and that effort is there every week, I’ll be pleased. We’re starting to believe.”
Tech dominated the opening 40 minutes, jumping out to a 24-5 halftime lead behind an imposing forward pack and an impressive performance from five-eighth Patrick Logan.
With the forwards generating considerable go-forward, Logan steered the team’s attack around the park. The five-eighth utilised the extra time and space on offer to create opportunities for his outside backs.
“Patty’s been around here for a while,” O’Donnell said. “He’s been through the hard times, and he’s really enjoying winning and going forward and having a pack that’s going forward.
“He’s built on last year, he was our player of the season and he’s continued to improve for us this year.”
Starved of possession for much of the match, Campbelltown finally experienced a sustained period of attack throughout the final 20 minutes of the game, raising the prospect of a second-straight Tech loss at the death. The Tahs largely held firm, conceding a late try, but ultimately shutting off any chance of a repeat of a late comeback.
The Tahs will now turn their focus to local rivals University, who are sure to provide an indication of where Tech currently sit in their rebuild.
Despite missing five players to a Country NSW representative camp, the Bulls recorded a 39-29 victory over Shamrocks.
”They call it the Challenge of the Bridge,” O’Donnell said. “It’ll be good, we’re playing at home, which will be good. We want to judge ourselves against them, see how we go, see how we measure up, especially in the forwards there. It should be a pretty good game.”
In other results, Blake Spencer scored a hat-trick in Avondale’s dominant 41-7 victory over Camden. Bowral were also impressive, piling on the points in a 55-14 win over Kiama.
And Vikings sent their rivals a clear message that they are not going anywhere, bouncing back from three-straight defeats with a 50-14 victory over former competition leaders Shoalhaven.
