Caves Beach extended their lead to 28 points at The Lakes on the Central Coast last weekend.
The South Coast team will need to turn the tables at Umina before travelling to Caves Beach for the finale next month, prior to the NSW Championships.
Kiama Downs have won the past six state titles, but have had a major overhaul in crew this year.
They finished second again last weekend behind Caves Beach, with Terrigal third. The women’s team from Kiama Downs took out the open female rescue and mass rescue races for the second consecutive round, but Caves Beach proved too strong in the open male tube race.
They Kiama Down open men were first in the rescue events before being downed by Caves Beach in the team race.
