On Tuesday, Mr Park wrote to the NSW Government to request the Illawarra be put on the couple’s regional tour when they visit Sydney in October.
The government announced it was proposing a regional itinerary including the Hunter, Blue Mountains and Bathurst, and Mr Park said he believed the Illawarra was ideal for a royal visit.
“Given the success the Illawarra has had in hosting major events including royal visits in the past there is no reason why we shouldn’t be on the list of places for Harry and Meghan to come and enjoy,” he said.
He noted the Queen had visited the region in 1954, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana oped the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre and Prince Andrew visited just under a year ago
“The Illawarra has everything that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle could ever wish for on a working holiday,” Mr Park said. “Beautiful beaches, terrific bushwalking, great places to eat and of course the most welcoming and friendly people in Australia.
“I want to make sure the Government looks at considering the Illawarra to be on the list of places the newlyweds visit as part of their first overseas tour.”
Proposing the visit, Mr Park said he was a supporter of an Australian Republic but believed it would bring worldwide attention to the region given the recent spike in interest in the royals.
