Speaking in parliament, Mr Ward announced his opposition to payroll tax.
“Of all the revenue-raising measures open to a government, this is the one I most detest,” Mr Ward said.
He wanted the government to raise the threshold where payroll tax is levied from $750,000 to $1 million, which he said would still be lower than most other states.

“Businesses approaching the payroll tax threshold are reluctant to hire more staff, not only because they become liable to pay payroll tax if they employ additional staff, but also because they become subject to the reporting and compliance requirements associated with lodging payroll tax returns,” Mr Ward said.
He said raising the threshold would “free up small business”.
