That’s one of a number of things people learned at Sunday’s open day at the Wollongong Botanic Garden.
“We had some activities at the Discovery Centre, which included making kitchen garden smoothies,” said Living Collections Curator James Beattie.
“Some of the parents were commenting ‘my children hate vegetables and these kitchen garden smoothies are fantastic’.”
Several thousand people turned up to enjoy a pleasant late autumn day in the garden, getting the chance to see behind the scenes and ask about anything from keeping backyard chickens through to seed bombs (rolling seeds into a ball of clay and potting mix to make it easier to grow seedlings).
The open day was held to make the second Botanic Garden Day, recognised by more than 70 gardens throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Beattie said the day wasn’t just about walking around the botanic garden but also giving people information on things they can do in their own gardens.
“It can be anything from conservation by planting local native into their garden through to composting through to learning what they can do to help support wildlife,” Mr Beattie said.
