Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the Crown Wollongong apartment complex – near the Crown and Corrimal street intersection – at 12.50am.
When they arrived they found the internal ground floor area full of heavy smoke and a garbage bin alight.
It is suspected the fire started in the bin after someone threw a cigarette butt into it.
Around 40 residents were removed from the complex while fire crews put out the burning bin and worked to remove the smoke and ventilate the area.
The residents were allowed to return to their apartments an hour later at 1.50am.
