Jaques was officially announced at the SCG on Tuesday, having previously coached at Queensland and in England, after the last of his 11 Test matches in 2008.

NSW played Sheffield Shield matches in the past two seasons at North Dalton Park, their recent struggles leading to a huge overhaul.

The Blues have claimed one Shield title in 10 years and made another final.

They lost their last seven matches last season, including a thrilling 36-run defeat to Queensland in Wollongong.

“As a former Blues player I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to coach NSW as part of a new era,” Jaques said.

“We have a number of exceptional young cricketers, many of whom have recently represented the Australian Under 19s, and I look forward to working with them so they can reach their full potential.

“Equally we have a senior group of players, many with international experience, who can play a big part in not only our performances on the field but also moulding this squad for future success.

“Patience is required as young players develop but this is an exciting time at Cricket NSW as we look to enhance the culture of improvement and learning and continue to be the leading provider of talent for Australian cricket.”

Veterans Ed Cowan and Doug Bollinger have retired, while, Maddinson and youngster Jay Lenton were released and paceman Gurinder Sandhu moved to Tasmania.

NSW then promoted Jason Sangha, Param Uppal, Dan Fallins, Mickey Edwards and Liam Hatcher. 

In March, the Blues led by 159 runs on the first innings at Dalton Park, but a 240-run partnership between Queensland middle-order bats Marnus Labuschagne (134) and Charlie Hemphrey (101) turned the tide.

NSW were then bowled out for 243 in 46.5 overs on the final day, 36 runs short of the target.
