A man accused of murdering his grandmother at her Bega home and then fatally wounding a man in an alleged carjacking and hammer attack on Friday has told the court he is sorry.

Murray Deakin, 20, appeared briefly in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, June 4, charged with the alleged murders of his 69-year-old grandmother and a 54-year-old man after the alleged carjacking at Bournda on Friday, June 1.
Deakin also faces two charges of wounding with intent to murder. He is yet to enter pleas.
The accused appeared in court just before midday, via audio-visual link. Defence solicitor Keely Boom did not apply for his release and bail was formally refused.
Deakin told the court he was sorry for his actions and spoke of his history of mental health issues.
“I’m so sorry,” Deakin said.
“I have a family history of schizophrenia.”
Deakin went on to tell the court of his history with “psychedelic drugs”, before Magistrate Mark Douglass cut him off.
Prosecutor Sergeant Mark Chaplin submitted two forensic procedure applications to the court, which were approved.
Blood and hair samples will now be taken from Deakin.
He is scheduled to face Bega Court in August for charge certification.
Monday’s appearance followed a brief bail hearing on Sunday after Deakin was charged with his grandmother’s murder. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
