The Ephemeral Art Program, created by Abhiruchi Chhikara, is a five project series using digital art and technology to light up dark spaces in winter.
From Friday to Monday, Thirroul will have a mix of animations, photos and videos projected onto the pavements between Ryan’s Hotel and the train station from 5:30pm to 10pm each night.
Ms Chhikara said she wanted the art to be relatable so gathered stories about individual businesses which form the projections.
“It’s not just about me it’s more about bringing everyone together and giving other people opportunity to create work as well,” she said.
The artist is also calling for collaborations for future events including a wearable digital art show in Wollongong, plus light installations at Berkeley Skate Park and the David Jones tunnel in Globe Lane Wollongong.
There will also be an interactive water and light installation to complete the project at Viva la Gong in November.
“I’m putting a platform together - projectors, lights and all that - and I’m creating works for them but then I’m also opening it up to other people to use the facilities,” Ms Chhikara said.
“It’s a lost chance if I just do it and pack it up and go but [the project is] also encouraging other digital artists and giving them a platform to create work because it’s something we’re always looking for.”
Ms Chhikara came from an engineering background before deciding she wanted to be more creative and went on to study digital design. After then completing a residency in Copehagen and being “immersed in design”, she returned home last year full of inspiration.
“Once you start making stuff if just gets the ball rolling … it’s addictive and you start finding ways to fund your art,” she said.
The Ephemeral Project was funded by Wollongong City Council’s Public Art Program.
Later this month council has also backed another Vivid-like event in the CBD, Nights On Crown.
Giant glowing Rabbits will be placed in the Crown Street Mall from June 21 to 23 with live musicians playing in shop fronts around the Mall, Globe Lane and Keira Street.
Some of the musicians performing include Shining Bird, Rainbow Chan, High-tails, Nasho Orion, Body Type, Big White and Freya Josephine Hollick.
