The man entered the Commonwealth Bank, on Lawrence Hargrave Drive, just after noon demanding money and threatening staff, police said.
A sum of cash was handed to the the man and he ran from the bank, getting into a vehicle that was parked outside.
Police have cordoned off the area and paramedics have assessed a bank employee, believed to be the woman directly involved in the holdup.
The woman is being comforted by other staffers.
The operator of the cafe Buck Hamblin, located next door to the bank, said he didn’t see or hear anything but some customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery.
“[They said] a guy with his face covered up … made reference to a gun and made off with money,” Luke Barrett said.
He said the women were told to get out.
Having heard of the robbery, another passer-by said “in Thirroul – who would have thought?”
Wollongong police, the dog unit and PolAir are searching for the man.
A spokeswoman for the Commonwealth Bank said the branch has been closed.
“Our first priority is the safety of our employees, customers and members of public. As a result, the branch will remain closed until further notice. No staff or customers were physically injured as a result of the incident,” the spokeswoman said.
“Any further enquiries regarding this matter should be directed to police.”
