There is something about this region which produces some world-class photographers who love playing among the many watery playgrounds the Illawarra has to offer.
We are lucky at the Illawarra Mercury to boast some of the best newsroom photographers in the country, each of whom love using our coastline as a canvas.
Yet the region is seemingly bursting at the seams with photographers, professional and amateur, who take great delight in capturing the beauty and diversity of our environment.
Warren Keelan is one of those photographers who revels in the surf of the Illawarra and South Coast.
His images have become iconic and he now spends his days make his living out of capturing the beauty in and around our ocean.
Warren’s photographs have become sought after nationally and internationally.
Two more of Warren Keelan’s images have won international acclaim.
His image Sea Horse won the Nature/Landscape category of the Memorial Maria Luisa Photo Awards (International Photo Awards) in Spain.
Emanate received Gold at this year’s Moscow International Photography Awards in the Nature/Landscapes category. While Sea Horse won silver at the same awards in 2017.
The scenery of the Illawarra is world-class and we have to thank photographers like Warren Keelan who take that beauty to the world.
Congratulations Warren.
POLICE BACK CAMPAIGN
Our State of Neglect campaign is calling for tougher sentencing for cases of severe child neglect to be introduced into NSW.
NSW has among some of the weakest child neglect laws in the country and we are calling for our judges and magistrates to be given the option of imposing jail terms for the worst cases.
It comes on the back of a case of the Illawarra’s own house of horrors.
Now, the NSW Police Association has backed the campaign with police often at the forefront of identifying the worst cases in our community.
The pressure is mounting on the NSW Government to act and act strongly with Minister Pru Goward already indicating her intention and preference for toughening the penalties.
