As the winds picked up on Thursday afternoon these three seals looked to be trying their skills at a spot of sailing.

Mercury photographer Sylvia Liber spotted the trio of fur seals while having a lookout for passing whales off Bass Point around the middle of the day.

We can only guess at whether they were deliberately co-ordinating their efforts, using their flippers to catch the wind, or whether they just happened to enjoy a moment of synchronised swimming.

They may have more luck on Friday, with blustery winds visiting the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a severe weather warning for the Illawarra and parts of the South Coast.

Damaging westerlies averaging more than 65km/h, with peak gusts in excess of 100km/h, could develop during the day in the higher parts of the region. Coastal areas should be calmer.
