Shellharbour City Council’s 17th annual Good Neighbour Awards presentation took place at the Shellharbour Civic Centre.
The winner of council’s Good Neighbour Award for 2018 was Joyce Stephens of Barrack Heights, who was nominated by her neighbour Manja Zschoener.
In the nomination submission, Ms Zschoener described Ms Stephens as someone who “has helped our family many times”.
“She is the best neighbour… She has helped us in so many ways and through difficult situations.”
Ms Stephens, 66, has lived in the Illawarra for four-and-a-half years after relocating from the Hawkesbury.
“I’m gobsmacked – I would never have believed it,” she said.
“I’ve never won anything like this. If I can help somebody, I will.”
The awards also included a drawing competition for children aged 12 and under.
