An extremely rare Ford GTHO Phase III that was once owned by former Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson sold for just over $1 million at a Lloyds Auctions in Kelso.

Lloyds Classic Car Auctions head auctioneer Bill Freeman said the price was a first for Australia.

“Now we have taken it into the seven digits we expect to be inundated by Phase 3 owners and buyers which is exciting for all classic car collectors and investors around Australia,” Mr Freeman said.   

The million-dollar GTHO Phase III sold for just over $5000 when it burst onto the Australian the market in 1971.

Meanwhile, another extremely rare car – a Holden Torana SS A9X GMP&A, car 1 of only 33 – sold for $500,000 at Saturday’s auction. 

“This car was an exciting find,” Mr Freeman said.

“It only has 14 kilometres on it and has been kept in a bricked-up garage for more than 30 years in near brand new condition.

“This sale shows that the buyer interest in Fords and Holden classics is continuing to grow after Australia’s car manufacturing closed down.”
