The state government will match the federal government’s $1.5 million funding commitment for a new four-lane bridge.
Mr Ward said he expected the bridge project to go to tender in the first half of next year after which time he will have a clearer indication of when the bridge will be finished.
“Once we’ve engaged a successful tenderer for design and construction of the bridge, then we’ll have a better idea of how long it will take,” Mr Ward said.
The Kiama MP was now looking at a project called the east Nowra sub-arterial, which would take traffic off the bridge behind Stockland Nowra shopping centre and link up with Greenwell Point Road.
“Even though it is separate from the bridge I think that project needs to be the next project,” he said.
“With traffic moving into Greenwell Point Road you effectively have a Nowra bypass. That would make an enormous difference to traffic congestion in the town, which has been an issue that people have raised in spire of this new bridge.”
