University of Wollongong deputy vice-chancellor global strategy professor Alex Frino returned from Italy this week after attending the 2018 Rome Roundtable.

Prof Frino represented UOW at the forum that involved 47 global leaders and former leaders in a variety of fields.
The Rome Roundtable is an annual event organised by the Global Foundation. It was held at Casina Pio IV which is a patrician villa inside the grounds of the Vatican which is home to the Pontifical Academies of Science and Social Sciences.
The Global Foundation is an organisation committed to co-operative globalisation. It seeks a world economy that is transformative, fair, inclusive and prosperous.
Professor Frino was joined by fellow UOW alumnus Mark Cutifani, a mining engineering graduate who also grew up in Wollongong.
Mr Cutifani is now chief executive of the $100 billion international mining giant Anglo American. The company was one of the forum’s major sponsors.
Other attendees included former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd, former director general of the World Trade Organisation Pascal Lamy, former Italian Minister of Labour Services professor Enrico Giovanni and the head of the World Bank for Southern Europe Marta Mueller Giucciardini.
“The Roundtable commenced with a speech from His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin representing Pope Francis, who spoke about how we can engage financial markets and business to reduce inequity from globalisation, human trafficking and the plight of refugees,” Prof Frino said.
“A number of solutions to these problems were discussed by heads of organisations who are considering, for example, how they can ban the purchase of products from organisation involved in trafficking and exploiting children, or deprive them of capital.”
Other themes at the 2018 Rome Roundtable included achieving global food security and investing to address climate change.
A topic close to Prof Frino’s heart, Realising Australia’s Potential, was also addressed.
