Fire crews and HAZMAT teams were called to reports of building waste and asbestos on the road after a truck lost its load at the Illawarra Highway about 4.15pm. 

Soon after, by about 4.40pm, these crews called off HAZMAT saying they were working successfully to make the area safe.

A second spill reported to be at Yallah on the Princes Highway was also causing traffic havoc around the same time.

Traffic in the usually-busy area was backed up to Dapto before 5pm.
