Chen’s deadpan charm will be complemented by the likes of Matt Okine, Dilkruk Jayasinha, Suzie Ruffell and Tom Cashman at Wollongong Town Hall this week for the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow.

The Chinese Australian with a rocking mullet has been a regular on ABC TV and their comedy channel on iView, while last year made headline after causing controversy on SBS.

The self-confessed “snoccer” fan was in full character for live half-time interviews for the Liverpool cs Sydney game – his cringe-worthy, unconventional style going viral.

His phone interview with the Mercury went much the same – confusion, stutters and silence. Though his stand-up is scoring rave reviews, voted Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival in 2017.

Chen began trying his luck on the comedy circuit seven years ago, mainly to boost his bank balance he said.

“The money was really lucrative at the time, it was kind of like the Bitcoin of 2011,” he said.

Chen said his Wollongong set will feature jokes and “and, um, a dramatic retelling or two”.
