A taste of celebrity will be at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music on Saturday with one of Los Angeles’s leading performing arts organisations for youth bringing a troupe for a free concert.
MUSYCA is touring Australia for the first time with 16 of their singing students and will perform a free concert in Keiraville this Saturday at 3pm.
The choir has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Greek Theatre; has collaborated with Rhianna, Danny Brown, Newsboys and Christopher Cross; and has appeared in numerous television shows and film.
“We have had some very interesting opportunities,” artistic director/founder Mikhail Shtangrud said.
Last year they performed with pop-star Camila Cabello at a US concert, “the most unique opportunity for the choir”.
“We were singing live on stage among stars like Skrillex and Imagine Dragons… that was pretty amazing and according to the kids it was a highlight of the year,” Shtangrud said.
He put their success down to the dedication and passion of the students.
“They really love what they’re doing and they put their time and effort into it,” Shtangrud said.
MUSYCA has been operating since 2010 with currently more than 80 singers aged 10 to 18. Singers do need to audition to join though the main quality they must have is a passion for the craft.
“We will always have a place to put a singer, if someone needs more work they will be in one group, if someone is more advance they will be in another group,” Shtangrud said.
“If they have the desire to learn, then it means they are talented.”
