Around 6pm signalling equipment at Coalcliff failed, in what a Sydney Trains spokesman called “an unexpected incident”.
Buses were brought in to replace trains for part of the journey, while some commuters had to catch different services to get home.
There were reports of commuters stuck waiting on trains and getting home close to midnight.
Services did not begin to return to normal until after 11pm.

“As the South Coast Line is one track in this section, services were delayed in both directions while repairs were made,” the spokesman said.
“Once the fault was operational, services were able to resume, however there were residual delays.”
The incident came after the South Coast line was closed over the weekend for trackwork.
The spokesman did not say whether the signalling issue was something that should have been picked up during the weekend shutdown.
