The drummer for Wollongong’s 19Twenty encouraged renowned names from Sydney to make music with him at Bundanon homestead, with Boyd’s Steinway grand piano the centrepiece.
Together Green, guitarist Matt Tonks, bassist Jonathan Zwarts and pianist Stu Hunter became The Bird and Tree Men and created nine mostly improvised works.
“Stu Hunter is an amazing pianist so I wanted something amazing for him to play, the Steinway is in such beautiful condition,” Green told the Mercury.
“Someone told me the music sounds like the score to a film that hasn’t been made yet.”
The piano was given away with the house, when Boyd gifted it – and his art collection – to the nation in 1993.
The initial collaboration was made possible by a Shoalhaven Arts Grant, as a way to entice professional musicians to record on the South Coast. It also included time in a recording suite in Nowra.
But Green said since he has finishing producing the album, The Flight Begins, he has been getting interest the group performing live.
The album will have its Illawarra launch at the Jamberoo Music Festival on Saturday July 21. It will also be made available for download via iTunes.
It’s not the only love Boyd and his beloved Bundanon has been given lately.
Last Friday the Minister for Arts Don Harwin awarded the Bundanon Trust an $8.5 million grant to build a new fireproof storage facility and gallery for their multimillion-dollar art collection.
