An iconic event on the Illawarra music scene’s calendar on the first weekend each July, it raises vital funds for mental health and suicide prevention charities in the region.
“All proceeds from this year’s event will go to Headspace, the West Street Centre and Lifeline – three organisations that provide valuable mental health support for our communities,” event co-organiser Kristy Newton said.
“Our aim is to increase the services available in the area, so that community members who are struggling are able to find the support they need.”
Ms Newton said the event started in 2002 in memory of much-loved local musician Belinda Deane, who took her own life in 2001.
A year later, those close to her organised the first HOPE concert in her memory at the then Oxford Tavern in Wollongong.
“It was put on in memory of Belinda, and to raise awareness around suicide and funds for services,” Ms Newton said.
“Over time it has grown and has become a way for anyone to remember someone they have lost to suicide, or to celebrate the times they still have with the people around them.”
The event’s been held at a number of venues but this Saturday it will be on from 3-9pm at the Servo Food Truck Bar in Port Kembla.
It has a great line-up of bands including Babymachine, The Leftards, Jodi Phillis and the Heathens plus there will be slam poets and circus performers.

Tickets for the event ($10) are available through TryBooking, where donations can also be made.
