Open viewings started with 100 people looking through on Wednesday with the apartments going to action on August 4.
Watermark Shellharbour in Addison Street has been build by Illawarra-based construction company Hyperbuild.
The project has attracted national interest because CLT is considered a revolutionary building material.
Hyperbuild managing director Theo Pasialis said the construction had all gone to plan. He is so impressed with the final result he sees himself building a house out of CLT
“I love this product. We are really pleased with the end result. It is great to see the final product and benefits CLT offers a building such as this. It is a very comfortable building. It was quick. There was hardly any wastage of materials on site. We have open houses every Wednesday and Saturday”.
Mr Pasialis said CLT was setting new standards for design quality and style and boasted a unique architectural appearance.
The new timber construction system involved large timber panels being craned into place forming the overall structure of the building.
Multiple layers of wood are then glued together at right angles under extreme pressure to create giant panels for flooring, load bearing walls and ceilings.
The construction process if faster and cost efficient. The installation of the 200 CLT panels by crane at 6A Addison Street was completed in 15 days. The development includes six one and two-bedroom apartments that will all got to auction from 10am on August 4.
Mr Pasialis said highly fire resistent CLT provided a completely different living experience to that of a traditionally constructed Australian home.
He said the apartments also had excellent thermal insulation and acoustic properties.
Mr Pasialis said a unique feature was the stairwell featured the exposed timber the apartments were built from.
He said the Watermark Shellharbour project has been so successful it will be followed by others.
“We are looking at expanding our CLT projects throughout the whole group.”
“We are currently finishing off a duplex at Lake Illawarra and a triplex in Ocean Beach Drive, Shellharbour”.
“And we are looking at starting eight town houses in Timbs Road, Oak Flats.”
“And we have a whole lot on the Central Coast which is like a little village. CLT really does lend itself to apartment building.”
Holz sales executive Teresa Costa said it was exciting to see something new that has never been done before on the market.
