Over 100 people rocked up to a free community event on Saturday to test out the “world-class facility” at Addison Street, Shellharbour Village.
The day featured free lessons with pro skaters, demo’s by Totem Skateboarding and King Pin teams as well as a number of competitions.
Totem Skateboarding representative Josiah Drew was full of praise for the new skate park.
“It really is a fantastic facility,” he said.
“Skateboarding is part of the 2020 Olympics. Facilities like this one can be breeding grounds for future Olympians.”
But Drew added the beauty of the Shellharbour facility was it also had plenty of options for recreational street and park riders.
In fact the $750,000 park was designed mainly for skateboarders of intermediate and advanced skill, but can also be used by beginners, scooter and BMX riders and roller skaters.
It has 20 different types of design features including a skate bowl, several street style skate features including hubbas, a pole jam, vert wall, mellow banks as well as a bowl up to 9ft in depth, concrete vertical ramp, hob walls with metal edges and flat banks.
Teenage Shellharbour professional scooter rider Matt Oshea said the new park was much better than the old facility.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said strong engagement with the city’s young people in particular had resulted in a facility that would suit people of all ages.
