Illawarra outlasted Newcastle in the regional Inter district challenge last weekend.
Newcastle had the better of the foursomes on Saturday, grabbing a slender one match lead 4.5 to 3.5 lead, but Illawarra turned the tide in the singles matches to win 12.5 to 11.5.
In the men’s division, Port Kembla’s Jason Ward and Shoalhaven Heads’ Mark Johnston managed to keep a perfect record over the weekend, winning both their respective foursomes and singles matches.
Ward partnered with the Links Danny Nesbitt to defeat their Newcastle opponents 1-up on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he took out Newcastle’s Justin Ely 2-and-1.
Johnston partnered with The Grange’s Dylan Humphries on Saturday to record an easy 4-and-3 win, before taking out Newcastle’s Dion Hannaford, 2-up on Sunday.
In the juniors’ division, Wil Diabarra, fresh from being named in the NSW CHS and All Schools team, had a perfect weekend. Diabarra won his Saturday foursomes match (with Eddie Ward) and then accounted for Newcastle’s Caleb Bromley 3-and-2 on Sunday. Kembla Grange’s Mitch Austin had the biggest result over the weekend, a 7-and-6 win in his single match against Newcastle’s Jessie Fittler.
Meanwhile, entries are now open for the NSW Country Championships at Goulburn on October 6-7, via the golfnsw.org website, with Illawarra defending the teams challenge crown.
The winner will earn a ticket into the $400,000 NSW Open at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in November, as The Links Shell Cove’s Anthony Brunero did in 2016.
